Six Month Smiles
Six Month Smiles is a type of braces that are designed to correct dental issues with only approximately six months of use. This is significantly shorter than the usual one to two years that braces are typically worn. Six Month Smiles braces make use of clear brackets and tooth-colored nickel-titanium wires to apply low-force movement upon the teeth. The treatment is ideal for patients who require the cosmetic straightening benefits offered by braces, but do not need complex corrections to their bite.
Some of the issues treated by Six Month Smiles include:
- Spacing issues
- Open bites
- Asymmetrical teeth
Six Month Smiles Treatment
The process starts by having the dentist determine whether or not the patient is good candidate for Six Month Smiles. If so, their teeth will be fitted with clear brackets and tooth-colored arch wires in very precise positions to achieve the most effective results. First, the brackets are fused to the teeth using a special dental bonding agent. Using a high-sensitivity light, the bonding agent is hardened and the brackets are secured to the teeth. Next, the wires will be attached to the brackets and properly adjusted to ensure proper tooth movement. The visit will end with the patient being provided special instructions on how to care for their Six Month Smiles.
The patient will visit their oral care specialist every month to have their wires adjusted as needed. This process is very quick, only taking about 10 to 15 minutes per visit. After approximately six months, the teeth will have adjusted to the desired position, and the patient will have the brackets and wires removed from their teeth. Once treatment is completed, it is often necessary to maintain the positioning of teeth through the use of a retainer.
