A provisional crown is a temporary dental crown that is put in place until a patient’s permanent custom dental crown is finished. Since our crowns are custom-built in dental laboratories, they require some time to be constructed and designed to meet the specific needs of the patient. During this time, the patient will receive a provisional restoration that provides all of the functions and duties of a healthy tooth. In addition to provisional crowns, there are also provisional bridges and provisional inlays and onlays.
Provisional restorations provide the following benefits:
- Protection of dental pulp
- Maintain health of gums
- Assist in chewing and speaking
- Provide oral comfort
- Upkeep tooth position
- Ensure remaining tooth structure is upheld
Although provisional restorations do not utilize impressions of the patient’s real teeth, they are still designed to resemble natural, healthy teeth. In the vast majority of cases, they fit in seamlessly with the patient’s other teeth and fully serve their purpose until the permanent restoration is ready to be added.
