Inlays and Onlays
Inlays and onlays are used to restore the function and appearance of teeth that are damaged in such a way that a full dental crown is unnecessary. While slightly more intricate than a regular filling, the end result is typically stronger and more durable. The dental health specialists at Dental American Group are proud to provide patients with inlays and onlays that leave teeth with a natural look and restored function.
Inlays and onlays are unique because they are constructed using impressions taken of the patient’s teeth. In most cases, inlays and onlays require two separate visits to one of our clinics. The first visit consists of taking impressions of the patient’s teeth, and the second visit involves permanently applying the custom inlay or onlay to the tooth.
A dental inlay consists of bonding filling material to the interior of a tooth. The inlay will not cover any of the tooth’s cusps, only the area inside these points. Typically, inlays are used when the patient’s tooth is too damaged to be restored with a standard filling, but not so damaged that it needs a full dental crown. Because inlays utilize a custom fit, they are usually stronger and more durable than teeth treated with a regular filling.
Onlays are used when a filling must cover at least one of the cusps, or points, of a tooth. In certain situations, a tooth’s entire chewing surface might be covered by an onlay. When an onlay is applied, the filling material is most often fixed to one or more of the cusps of the tooth. Onlays are recommended when a tooth requires repairs to restore its appearance and function, but a full dental crown would be considered excessive.
