Porcelain Dental Crowns
When a tooth is lost or damaged, a dental crown is placed at the site in order to restore its appearance and function. Our practice utilizes porcelain in our dental crowns because of the material’s superb functionality and natural look. Dental crowns are used in many situations including:
- Protecting a weakened tooth
- Root canal recovery
- Replacing lost teeth
- Improving tooth functionality
- Aesthetic improvements to one’s smile
- Supporting misshapen or repaired teeth
In most cases, receiving a porcelain dental crown requires two visits to one of our offices. During the initial visit, part of the affected tooth is shaved off so that the dental crown can be properly fitted. If the crown is replacing a lost tooth, the oral care expert will install a dental implant at the site so the crown can be added later. Next, the patient will have an impression of their mouth taken. This impression is extremely useful in the actual creation of the crown, which will be customized to resemble the natural shape and shade of the patient’s teeth.
To hold the patient over while their customized crown is being constructed, a temporary crown will be put in place. During the second visit, the temporary crown will be removed, and the custom porcelain crown will be permanently affixed to the tooth. The patient will be provided with special instructions on how to properly care for their newly installed porcelain crown.
Dental bridges, which are also known as partial dentures, are prosthetic devices that are used when the patient is missing multiple teeth. Bridges resemble natural teeth, and they are designed to fill the gap that is created by the missing teeth. As is the case with our dental crowns, our bridges are constructed using porcelain because of the natural appearance and strong performance of the material. Much like regular dentures, bridges can be designed to be permanently-fixed within the mouth or removable for easy cleaning.
Fixed bridges are attached by either placing dental crowns directly upon supporting teeth or by permanently bonding prosthetic teeth to adjacent supporting teeth. Once installed, a fixed bridge will not be able to be removed by the user. Removable bridges are kept securely in place using special metal clasps or precision attachments. The wearer will be able to easily take out their removable bridge when needed.
